Luther Statue

Luther DenkmalOn October 16th 2011, this arrangement designed by sculptor Hilko Schomerus was inaugurated. As a reformer, Luther was instrumental in spreading the Protestant faith. He held sermons and masses in many places.

The monument symbolises the "man bent in himself" - an important theme in Protestant theology - and represents the pressure on every Christian at that time, forced and bent by social, political and religious doctrine.

This was also the case for Luther, whose inner development through his faith experiences is also reflected in this monument. Through the knowledge he gained, he strove to change the religious circumstances of the time, and finally, freed from these constraints, he strode through the portal - here in the guise of the Junker Jörg.

When we pay tribute to Martin Luther at this point, it should be emphasised that Borna was a "nucleus of the Reformation". Protestant mass was held here very early on and a Protestant preacher was active from 1518.

In 1526, under the leadership of Luther's friend Georg Spalatin, the first Protestant church visitation took place in Borna; only later did these take place in the Altenburg and Meissen regions.

Martin Luther visited Borna several times on his way to Altenburg, where he visited Spalatin. Four sermons he preached in Borna were printed in 1528 and thus preserved for posterity. It should not be forgotten in this context that his future wife Katharina von Bora was born in nearby Lippendorf.
