Town Church St. Marie

Stadtkirche

Located on the Martin Luther Platz, the Town Church St. Marie have its homeplace. Together with the town of Borna, it was built in the 1st half of the 13th century. Presumably the first market place was also located here, which is not unusual for medieval towns.

The church was dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. It received its present appearance in the 15th century. The foundations were laid on Whitsun 1411. However, construction was delayed by several wars. In 1434, the master builder Hans Wolffart from Königsberg (Franconia) was hired to continue the construction of the Gothic hall church. The town church was consecrated on October 16th 1456.

An interesting object is the altar of the Virgin Mary from 1511 by Master H.W. The artist, better known as Hans Witten (born around 1470 and died in Annaberg in 1522) is believed to be behind these initials. Over the centuries, the town church underwent several structural changes, including the installation of galleries in the 18th century. During the comprehensive renovation of the church between 1963 and 1967, the original condition of the interior was restored by the monument conservation department.
